Safety Tips in Flood Emergencies

Safety Tips in Flood Emergencies

According to the Weather Channel, Tropical Storm Harvey has the potential to be "the first U.S. Catgory 3 hurricane landfall in almost 12 years."1 and with it, the potential for severe flooding in parts of Texas and Lousiana. Here at LegalEASE, we want to ensure that you are as safe as possible this hurricane season. Below are some tips on how to best prepare yourself, your family, and your home in case of flooding.

10 Tips for Before a Possible Flood:

  1. Check to see if you are covered on your insurance plan for flood damage.
  2. Be sure to actively listen to news or radio programs to stay up to date on warnings and advice.
  3. Keep a waterproof emergency kit, filled with any vital medicine, first aid items, dry clothes, a flashlight, cash, and batteries.
  4. Keep an emergency food stash with canned items.
  5. Fill empty water containers with fresh water for drinking.
  6. Fill bathtubs with water for washing clothes and flushing the toilet.
  7. Make sure your car is filled with gas, in case you need to evacuate.
  8. Turn off any propane tanks in case of fire.
  9. Unplug appliances in case of power surges.
  10. If you still have time, move valuables to the 2nd or 3rd floor of your home.

5 Tips for During a Flood:

  1. If you are in a vehicle, do not drive in deep water! Water as little as two feet deep can sweep away even a truck. Pull over on the side of the road. If you are stranded on a flooded road, get out of the vehicle and move to any nearby higher ground.
  2. If you are in your home, move to a higher floor.
  3. Switch off your electricity and gas appliances in your home.
  4. Avoid entering any flood waters.
  5. Boil tap water to ensure it’s safe to drink.
